Sleep of the Beloved
What happens to lvoers while they are sleeping? Is it a sleeping just next to each other, each on his own, or is there a sharing of certain places or emotions? Is is a nocturnal lover's dance, maybe a kind of unaware performed tenderness, or does one turn the back on each other? Is there a conjunction with the other, with one's self?
"the sleep of the beloved" was born as my diploma in 2010 at the university of applied arts Vienna and has become an ongoing long-time project.
Each picture of the sleep of the lovers is one long-time exposure. The exposing time is 6 hours, from midnight until 6am. The room with the bed is in my studio-apartment, I am at no time of the expose in the room myself. I just light the candles, set up the stage.
How might "your beloved sleep" look like?
Interesting concept, however, I don't know how comfortable I would be letting people sleep in my bed for the sake of art.

ISS Star Trails
Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit relayed some information about photographic techniques used to achieve the images: “My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.”
Because, really, how many people have the opportunity to take long exposure pictures from space?

Before and After Shots of Joggers
Last summer, Sacha Goldberger decided he would take on a very interesting project. He assembled a team who helped him create an outdoor studio at Bois de Boulogne, a park located near Paris that's 2 1/2 times the size of New York's Central Park. He stopped joggers, asking them for a favor - would they sprint for him and then pose right after for his camera? Many obliged. Out of breath, these joggers showed an overwhelming amount of fatigue on their faces.
Goldberger then asked these same people to come into his professional studio exactly one week later. Using the same light, he asked them to pose the same way they had before.
"I wanted to show the difference between our natural and brute side versus how we represent ourselves to society," Goldberger tells us. "The difference was very surprising."
Also, I dig that guys glasses. And after a session in kettlebells and then a 3 mile run tonight, I am very quite sure I look so much worse than any of these people.

Things I Want #204
The X100 uses an 12.3 megapixel APS-C sized sensor, the same size used on most full-size digital SLR cameras. While it doesn't offer as high a resolution as the latest pro SLRs, the sensor is paired with a newly designed 23mm f/2.0 Fujinon lens. The prime lens, which has the same angle of view of classic 35mm lenses for 35mm cameras, includes an aspherical element optimized to deliver light rays perpendicular to the sensor. This optimization produces sharp images from edge to edge with no noticeable light fall-off.
The lens also incorporates a nine-bladed aperture for smooth bokeh and a high-speed leaf shutter which allows flash use up to the maximum 1/4000 shutter speed. A built-in neutral density filter can also be turned on for up to three stops exposure adjustment, allowing use of larger apertures and or slower shutter speeds than typical under bright lighting conditions.
List price around $1000, due March 2011. Man.....if I could only afford this, I'd be all over if. Gorgeous.

Macro Eyes
Suren Manvelyan's beautifully close shots of irises showing all of the different valleys and hills. I have supreme camera/lens envy and I can only imagine what it must be like to be able to produce a shot like these.

Sherman, TX
Ah, Sherman. You're not far from me, you have so little of interest to the normal person, and you've cost me $500 due to my incompetence at, you know, seeing. However, your complete pragmatism at having all kinds of giant buildings full of roundness, rust and fantastic graffiti somewhat wins you back over in my heart. Somewhat.

Mila's Daydreams
I am not one of those girls that are obsessed with babies and how cute they are. Anyone who knows me understands this is not my thing. Ooohing and Awwing and making funny sounds at infants just isn't something I ever understood. That said, I actually think the idea of Mila's Daydreams is adorably cute. I think it is more the imagination of the shots and inventiveness of the use of fabric, but hey, let's go instead with the cute baby being the hook.

Graffiti
Every now and then, in between all of the ugliness, name calling and self-centered egoism, you see something beautiful. Sometimes, you just have to go searching for it, as it is out of the way and rather hidden.

Ewwwww
$15.00 for one pound of fake fat. Seriously the most awesome thing I possibly saw in all of the places I went that day. And I saw a lot of awesome.
Not alot; but a lot. Nuances.

Flickr Flow
Using an algorithm developed for the WIRED Anniversary visualization, our software calculated the relative proportions of different colors seen in photos taken in each month of the year, and plotted them on a wheel. The image below is an early sketch from the piece. Summer is at the top, with time proceeding clockwise.
